Gutsy performance by the TIgers
On a night when the D struggled, they were able to come up with a huge play towards the end of the game and stop ATU on 4th and one. HUGE PLAY.
Otherwise, the Offense did a great job of keeping us in the game making big play after big play. Great overall game by Deion - some big time runs as well as some pinpoint passing. It was tough to run for much of the night, but we found a way - something that good teams always seem to be able to do.
I am still puzzled over why we seem to start really slow - have done so in each of our first three games, but if given the choice, I'll take finishing strong over not finishing strong each time.
That makes us 3-0 with a big road game to SAU next Thursday. If we can get that one we'll be 4-0 and set up for a nice season. the offense continues to roll along - I don't have the final stats yet but you can get them on the web site later. We did enough and that is plenty.
Fun game - scary in several places - to watch. Lots of talent out on the field for us and if we can stay healthy
Special kudos to Tariq Ali for his game saving plays - the stop on that critical fourth and one and his game ending interception make him a candidate for defensive player of the week.
OK y'all. It's fun. Make sure to check the Tigerw out on tv next Thursday as they travel to Magnolia, AR.

1:27 left on the clock. The exhausted D came up with their biggest play of the game stopping an ATU run on 4th and one.
clock stops with 1:16 left and 3rd down and 10 for UWA on the ATU 45.What will Will do? Call a run and let the clock run down and then take a delay penalty? Or try a pass and try for the first down but risk stopping the clock? Tough call.
no timeouts left for ATU
stopped for no gain. Should be about 35" left when we snap the ball. Will we punt or just run a play and give them the ball near mid-field. If we kick, we risk getting it blocked or giving up a big punt return. What would you do?
Thirty one ticks left on Big Ben.
Looks like we'll punt.

3rd down pass dropped - right in the Wonder Lad's hands and he dropped it. WOW>
4th and one - this could be the game
THE D MADE A STOP ON 4th AND ONE WHEN THEY NEEDED IT THE MOST.
1:32 left on the clock - just grind it out and run out the clock. One first down and the game is over.

it's up to the O now
The D is tired, they are holding on for dear life. It's up to the O to pick them up and get some points on the board. A FG keeps it a one possesion game, so a TD is what we need.
ball on our own 25.
Deion for 2 yards on a QB keeper.
Need something here so we're not 3rd and long
a million flags on the play - pass interference and it looks like it's on ATU
We'll take that - a first down and even better field position.
We're on our own 38.
Baylor for 8 on the option.
Roosevelt Ross for 10 of the toughest yards you'll ever see, dragging 3 of the Wonder Lads with him.
Deion on the keeper up the middle for about 4 yards. Less than 4' left on the clock. Can we keep the ball the whole time and not give it back?
loss of 3 on a swing pass. We need at least one more first down.
long pass incomplete down the sideline.
4th down and we have to punt
rugby punt down to their 20 yard line.

rugby
we kick off and...
stop the return at the 32 yard line. Not bad.
Here we go -11:00 left in the game - a stop now would be huge.
long pass incomplete on first down - a litte deviation from their usual (and successful) offense.
3rd and 4 - great call by ATU - a screen pass for the first down.
They are on our 49. A loss of 4 by Graziano.
20 yard pass play for a first down - that hurt. The receiver was wide open and Rocky drilled the ball right into his chest.
DEFENSE NEEDS TO MAKE A PLAY HERE. Injury time out on the field. Our D can sure use the rest - they are looking tired and a step slow right now.
time out for a measurement. First Down.
WE NEED A STOP!!
5 yards on first down - they seem to be going thru us like a hot knife thru butter.
You guessed it - another first down to our 7 yd line. We've done better in short yardage situations. Maybe.....
yes, a stop for no gain. 2nd down.
another stop for a short gain. 3rd down.
TD - guy wide slap open in the endzone
The attempt for 2 points is no good. We need another score - a FG makes it still a one possession game. A TD makes it a 2 possession game

we scoe a huge td
Roosevelt Ross drove it in from the one yard line. That makes it a 2 possession game now. Our D got a bit of a rest on that drive but they really need to make a statement now and get a stop -
it all starts with kickoff coverage. We need to limit the return yardage again.
it all starts with kickoff coverage. We need to limit the return yardage again.
15' to go
one quarter left.
2nd and 10 on our own 23.
We need to keep this drive alive and moving. More points is our best defense at this point - the more we score, the more pressure on ATU's Offense.
Deion fumbled the ball - horrible luck there. Now are backs are really against the wall.
one of our running backs was just led into the dressing room- not a good bit of luck there.
3rd down for ATU on our 26 yard line. Crowd is on its feet yelling for the D to stop them.
pass broken up and it's 4th down.
They eschew the FG and go for it - incomplete. The TIGERS HOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

possible turning point
Can we make something out of this opportunity. Another score would be big, especially if it's a touchdown.
we're backed up though on our own 12. Maybe Ross on a run?
gains one on a run.
Tigers take a time out - looks like we were in the wrong formation or something. The OC looked a little upset and needed to straighten every thing out - can't have a mistake this deep in our own territory.
2nd and 9
loss of 4 on a run -
3rd and 12 from our own 11.
great scramble by Deion - first down. That is a huge play - gives our D some more rest and improves our field position if we have to punt.
Lowery drops a pass right in his hands - 2nd down as the quarter ends.

I'm tired of saying it but...
we need great kick coverage yet again. Uncle Mo might be changing uniforms.
not great coverage - they get 20 yds to their own 32 yard line.
D needs to rise up - and 3 after a nice run on first down.
good stop for no gain.
14 yd pass for a first down.
they break off a good run for a first down.
Our D looks tired - ATU is racking up some big yardage on the ground on a consistent basis now.
first and 10 on our 23. I am telling you we NEED someone to step up and make a play of some kind.
There's the play I was talking about - Jeremy May makes a big tackle for a loss
incomplete - should have been caught.
3rd down now - oh, what I'd give for a stop.
illegal forward pass on Graziano - loss of down - 4th down. It's a long FG - will they try it -
No. they are going to punt.
downed at the 12.

we need a stop
It took a long time - our D was out there forever, but at least we stopped them from scoring. I hope we can hold on to the ball for a while and let the D catch their breath.
Big run by Ross 53 yards.
that gets us some great field position-now we need to drive the ball.
Deion tries to scramble but gets caught for no gain.
Great throw and catch to Worsham for a first down. Deion threw a laser to him and he held on for a few extra yards after the catch.
eeper by Deion for 9 yards.
ow a loss of 4
Big play here
dropped pass in the end zone. Trying a FG from the 41
FAKE FAKE FAKE
First down run by the holder Gary Johnson.
Dameon Baylor scores on a run from 15 yards out.
UNA back in the lead. What a great call on 4th down - the fake caught them totally by surprise - great play by a freshman carrying out the fake and running the ball.

we need good kick coverage
So far it's been pretty good with one exception. Never more important than it is now to start the 2nd half. if they get a big return and get good field position, we'll be back up against it right away.
The Tigers seem somewhat subdued on the side line and ATU seems pretty energetic - whatever that might mean.
good kickoff coverage - short return to 25 yard line. Now....what will the D do.
QB scrambles for 10 - measurement for the first down - They got it. We had their rceivers covered and he was wide open for the scramble.
off sides UWA - 1st and 5
missed tackle - again - 2nd and one
ho hum - another wide open receiver for another first down - at our 28 yd line.
WE NEED A STOP!!
good pass rush that time - forced him to throw early and it was incomplete.
3rd and 5 - somebody step up and make a play, please.
4th and one and they are going for it - they sure don't think we can stop them
time out ATU - maybe they were trying to draw us off side. We'll see after the TO.
they were right - we couldn't stop them - first down at our 16 - by inches
nice stop for a 2 yard gain. This is almost our worst case scenario - our D is out there for a long, long drive and getting more and more tired.
Little bit of a psss rush forces an incomplete pass.
3rd and 8 - holding penalty on ATU - forced by a good pass rush.
HUGE 3rd down now.
imcomplete pass in the end zone. Good coverage.
4th and 10 - a 42 yard field goal.
they decide to punt after a delay of game penalty. Good punt. Pins us down on our own 5 yard line.

almost time for the 2nd half kick off
Would love to know what the Tigers are going to try to change things around in the second half. We can't let them score early - if we can get a stop or two we'll have a chance, but it has to start with the D on their first series of the half.
teams are back on the field - kickoff in a minute or so.
teams are back on the field - kickoff in a minute or so.
D has to tighten up in the 2nd half
We need to figure something out on the defensive side of the ball. They have moved the ball pretty easily throughout the first half. Our D has been out on the field a lot, due in part to little offense in the first quarter. They'll get tired pretty quickly in the 2nd half if they have to stay on the field for long ATU drives.
Kind of scary how easily ATU seemed to move the ball - large holes for their RBs and wide open receivers catching very accurate balls from Graziano. Tough task ahead for our boys.

crucial defensive series with time running down
51 seconds left in the half - we need s stop bad. Cannot give up any more points.
They run it up the middle - maybe they are happy to go into the locker room with a 3 point lead? they call time with 23" left - maybe they'll try one long play before the half? Why did they call that time out?
short run to end the half.
Back in a minute

We're down again and need a score bad.
a run for no gain and a 3 yd pass play - 3rd and 7 and we need a big play here. TV timeout. At least our D will get a little more rest this way.
Deion keeps it for 9 yds and a first down on our own 43
Sure looked like pass interference but no call - incomplete. We sure don't need any ref meltdowns now.
3rs and 9 - Deion threw to a guy who was totally covered - not good. We have to get good punt - fair catch on their 17. Got to stop them now - can't let them have any more points this half.

slow them down again?
We are seeing some pretty darn QB play in this game.
Good kick coverage. Stopped them on their own 25. Now they get a penalty for holding and back to their own 12.
MIssed tackle at the 12 and they run it to our 42. This game is so basic - block, catch, tackle.
Almost an interception - should have had it. Incomplete at least. 3rd and 2 - big down for the D
Wide open receiver for a first down at our 23 - sure wish that DB had held on to the almost interception.
Forced a fumble making it 3rd down and 14. Wide open reciever - again - for a first and goal.
3rd and goal from the 3 - can we hold?
psss interference in the end zone on Tisdale - what a time for our first penalty of the night!
Their RB goes into the end zone untouched - we're down again.
10 play drive for 87 yards - we can't keep our D on the field forever like this. Just can't do it.

Their mistake - what will we do?
Nice run for 7 yards on 2nd down. 3rd and 3. nice short pass to Worsham who turns it into a big first down.
Got to keep moving the ball now.
Nice run for 7 yds.
Mix up on the pass and it falls incomplete.
4th and inches - we go for it.
FIRST DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we are starting to work the clock a little now - start wearing down their D a bit.
Wide open pass to Lowery for a TD - 40 yards!
UWA takes the lead for the first time.
8 plays for 76 yards on that drive - good deal

deja vu all over again
Just like our first 2 games, we start out slow and then start to get moving in the second quarter. Time for the D to carry the load for a while.
Kick coverage looms large again - can't give them field position right after a TD.
As I feared - they get a huge return (52 yds) and start out on our 40.
There's a break - they fumble a first down catch and we get the all on our own 25.
Can we take advantage of their mistake?

Can we catch lightning in a bottle again
Our Kickoff team needs to make something happen again. Our offense hasn't really even been able to get anything going so far so some field position would be greatly appreciated.
returner dropped at the 19 yard line. No field position this time. Have to do it the old fashioned way. First down on 2 runs. Let's keep that up - the run might be our best friend if we can keep it going - keep Graziano off the dang field.
40 yard pass to Worsham for a first down.
Dameon Baylor goes 31 yds for a first down.
Why can we not start games like we play the last 3 quarters?
Let's go D. We need to find a way to slow them down.

can graziano be stopped?
We need a good stand by the D now. Get the ball back and start rolling again.
I hope we can stop this guy and get some field posiiton.
No such luck - 10 yds on first down and a new set of downs.
NIce stop on a pass into the flat area. Gain of only 2. Where's the pass rush? He's getting rid of it pretty quickly but no pressure yet.
14 yard run for a first down. They are on the move yet again. Another 10+ yard run for a first down.
A pass down to the goal line. We just cannot stop them.
3rd and goal - is there any hope we can stop them one more time and force a field goal? That would be huge and keep us right in the middle of things. They are having their way with our defense. Huge holes for their running backs and wide open spaces for their receivers. A QB that just doesn't miss - not hard to see why he was a DI player in a previous life.
3rd and inches and they get a TD - 17-7 now and not looking good.

10-0 and we've got little to shout about so far
We need a kick return bad - something to fire us up. Haven't been able to do much of anything so far.
Well, we got an 89 yd ko return from Terry Allen and the score is now 10-7.
Hope this excitement will spread to the defense now. If we can get an early stop and get some field position, things might change a little.

good punt coverage that time.
So far, our kick coverage has been pretty good. Need to keep that up. We can't afford to give this QB any field position advantage.
20 yd run off tackle for an ATU first down. Ran it right down our throats that time.
Good pass coverage on 1st and 10. 15 yd pass for a 1st down. No answer for this qb yet.
Another 20 yd pass for a first down. This guy don't miss.
Great pass break up by the freshman Ford (# 19)forcing ATU to kick a 22 yd FG.
Finally stopped them - some.

UWA needs to respond
6 plays for 44 yards and we're down 7-0. All started with a special teams mistake by the kick returner stepping out of bounds, leaving us with bad field position. A short punt gave ATU great field position and they capitalized.
We need to respond right now and not let this get out of hand.
A decent return to our 27 - s little better field position to start out this drive.
Ross carries for about 20 yards to our 43. First Down.
Williams escapes pressure and makes a great throw - receiver drops the pass right in his hands. Got to punt.
A few signs of life for the Tigers on that drive. The D just has to step it up after this punt

good punt coverage
A short punt but we covered it well. ATU has good field position (our 44) so the needs to rise up early now. Sure would have liked an opening drive instead of 6 plays an out. ATU is so explosive - scary time.
ATU gets 9 yds on first down run. Yikes. Easy first down on another run to our 27.
Now a pass down to our 9 yard line. It's like the D isn't out there right now.
We seem to start slow in every game - what's up with that?
TOuchdown pass on 3rd down. That DI transfer can throw it.
Down 7-0.

we win the toss and elect to receive
Allen takes the kickoff and...steps out of bound? What??
3rd an 9 and a first down pass. Good play.
Running game hasn't produced anything on 4 plays so far.
Great defensive play to break up a long pass on 3rd down. Got to give up the ball.

great national anthem tonignt
Te Scarlet Band from Tiger Land did a great instrumental/vocal rendition of the national anthem tonight. WoW!!
Hats off to the vocalist. It would take millions to get me out there and singing in front of this crowd.

more stats one hour before KO
Even though both schools played relatively weaker teams in their openers, which might skew statistics a bit, it looks like the two teams are pretty evenly matched in a lot of categories.

If the game were to be played on paper, it would be very close. My feeling is the game on the field tonight will be a nail biter as well. I think the team that plays the best defense and/or has the fewest turnovers will prevail. Hope it's the Tigers.

If the game were to be played on paper, it would be very close. My feeling is the game on the field tonight will be a nail biter as well. I think the team that plays the best defense and/or has the fewest turnovers will prevail. Hope it's the Tigers.
an apology
In a previous post I mentioned "Danny's Home Plate" I, of course, meant to write ANDY'S HOME PLATE. I apologize for the mistake. The food is still just as great. Go get you some.
the Wonder Lads look pretty good on paper
Just going over some information on the game notes. ATU has some skill players who look pretty tough.
Frantz Simeon had 172 all-purpose last week against Incarnate Word - 108 of them via 2 kick-off returns. Since kick coverage has been a worry for us, I hope we have that all straightened out for tonight - this guy could cause problems, big problems.
RB Cody Burns had 162 yds rushing on only 17 carries for the Wonder Lads. He gashed IWC for 9.5 yds per carry - pretty awesome I'd say - including a 45 yarder for his longest run of the night. He also caught a pass for 35 yds and scored one TD rushing.
DI transfer Mick Graziano (Nevada) runs ATU's prolific offense and is a mere 3 yards behind UWA's GSC leading Deion Williams in average yds of total offense per game.
All in all it looks like the Wonder Lads are a pretty explosive lot - out D will have to be on its toes tonight.
More later.

just about 2 hours to KO
Well, I'm back the saddle. Little bit less than 2 hours to kick-off. The weather might become a big deal - can't tell whether it will rain, and if so, when the rain might get here. Heard there's a lot of rain south of here but the cell may have stalled out there - fingers crossed.
Awful lot of chicken pieces and 6" Subway subs just got delivered. Since bringing you all of the color and pageantry of college football is definitely a team effort, I'm going to go do my part - being the team kind of guy that I am. Should be back in about 30'- maybe a bit longer if any banana pudding arrives from Danny's Home Plate. Got some rave reviews today about their lunches. Go get you some.

UWA-Arkansas Tech Preview
By Nicholas Finch, UWA Sports Information Student Assistant
The University of West Alabama will host Arkansas Tech (ATU) Wonder Boys at Tiger Stadium in the Gulf South Conference season opener.
ATU comes in to Tiger Stadium with the second-best quarterback in terms of total offense in the GSC. Nick Graziano, a transfer from the University of Nevada, has averaged 308 yard per contest during the 2-0 start for the Wonder Boys. He has been a passing machine by throwing for 558 yards with 37 completions on 58 attempts with five touchdowns. ATU also has the conference second best rushing attack led by Cody Burns who has rushed for 174 yards on 22 attempts.
Tiger fans should expect to see the Wonder Boys stay true to the offense formula they have been using. Graziano will be a big factor on offense as he will look to connect with his big target Landon Turner, who leads the team with 11 catches and an average of 99 yards per game.
The Wonder Boy defense is led by a trio of players. Strong Safety Tario Dansby is the team co-leader with tackles with 13 and also has one interception. Linebacker Matt Kitchens and Defensive Back RonDerrick Jackson also have 13 tackles for the defense.
UWA is looking to break a 10 game losing streak in the series against ATU. The Tigers came close to breaking that streak last year, but came up just short with a 26-24 fourth quarter setback. That game marked the only road loss as a starter for UWA quarterback Deon Williams in a Tiger uniform as he suffered a season ending ACL injury.
Williams is ranked number one in the GSC in total offense averaging 311 yards per contest. He has completed 34 0f 50 pass attempts for a total of 604 yards with seven touchdowns. The Tigers boast the fourth ranked rushing offense in the GSC. Dameon Baylor leads the team with 92 yards on 27 rushing attempts. Not far behind Baylor is Roosevelt Ross who boasts 91 yards on 18 carries.
Tiger fans should expect to see a very balanced attack from the Tigers to start the game. If the Tigers fall behind, Williams will be able to find one of his three favorite targets, wide receivers Gerald Worsham and Micheal Townsend and tight end Jason Hawkins.
Worsham and Townsend are tied for the team lead in receptions with seven each. Worsham has accumulated more receiving yards with 154, but Townsend is right on his heels with 139 yards. Both receivers have scored a touchdown a piece. Hawkins leads the team in receiving touchdowns with two. He also leads the team with 24.8 yards per catch has caught five passes for 124 yards.
The UWA linebackers are the heart of the Tiger defense. Tariq Ali, Vonzell Jackson, and DeAntuan Matthews have combined for a total of 49 tackles. Ali leads the group with 18 tackles. The leader in the Tigers secondary group is strong safety J.D. Douglas who has been a defensive force with 16 tackles.
Viewers of this game should expect a close contest throughout the game as these are evenly matched. Neither team holds a clear statistical advantage over the other. This game will come down to the team that makes the least mistakes during the game.
The last time UWA beat Arkansas Tech was September 7, 1996 which saw the Tigers claim a 38-34 victory in Livingston. ATU leads the series 11-4.
One last important statistic to mention, UWA quarterback Deon Williams is undefeated in Tiger Stadium.Kick off is scheduled for 7:00.

got to like this
the D has to be feeling it now. The O has been TCB the last couple of drives. Now the D has to just do their job and we'll be sitting in clover.
Good special teams coverage on the Kickoff. Nice start. Let's go D. Likely to be a lot of passing from HU.
Almost a sack - the QB juked the rusher bad. Completed a pass of 6 yards.
good tackle on a short pass play. 3rd and short. Pass rush forces incomplete pass. Will they punt on 4th - they almost have to on their own 35 and 10' left on the clock.

defining moment of the game?
If UWA can drive it in, it might be a turning point in this close, hard fought contest.
A nice pass on 1st down.
Nice run on 2nd down.
3rd and one - what will they call - the 3rd quarter ends so we have some time to talk it over and make the next play call.
A much better quarter both sides of the ball. Only one penalty. Better tackling in the last 7-8 minutes of the quarter. A strong drive can really put us in great position to take the game.
Nice interrior blocking - a first down run.
Keep the clock rolling now fellas.
whew!! that was close. A fumble was ruled down by contact or we would have seen HU taking it the other way all to the house. No gain on the play.
First down pass play to Gerald Worsham. First and 10 now. Keep it going. This is feeling good.
Baylor on a nice hard run for 5 yards. HU defense seems to be wearing down a bit.
Roosevelt Ross on a 7 yd - hard run - bouncing off tacklers like a pin ball. First down.
Keep it going.
Great catch by Gerald Worsham - TD. really accurate throw from Deion. What a drive. That has to take a little steam out of HU.
Now, if the D can really rise up, we'll put them between a rock and a hard place.
Almost a 5 minute drive - 9 plays for 59 yards - HU is tiring on the D side.
A nice pass on 1st down.

great tackle on the kickoff
Special teams felt it that time. Nice hard tackle on the kickoff return. Let's go D.
Delay of game on HU. Good to see someone else get a penalty for a change.
no gain - 2nd and 15. time for a big play.
another penalty for HU - wheel coming loose? Great solid tackle on a short pass. Ucle Mo starting to switch uniforms here?
incomplete. 4th and forever. time for a punt and we want a nice return - but no penalties and no muffs - a good solid play will do.
OK nice catch and a 5 yd return - but no fumble. First down Tigers.
Best defensive stand of the game so far. Now let's get a long drive going.

time to step up and make a statement
The O needs to GO!!
Baylor on a nice carry for 6,
Baylor again for 7 and a first down. Some good hard running.
Nice pass to Mike Townsend for about 25 yards and a first down. The runs set up the pass great that time. SWEET.
Wide open to TE Jason Hawkins down to the 5. Got to score on this series. great read by Deion and great grab by the sure handed Hawkins.
Smash mouth and we get nothing on a first down run.
Short side pitchout for 3 yards.
2 yd pass to Terry Levy in the right corner of the end zone.
Wonderful drive - mix of runs and passes - went through them like a hot knife through "I can't believe it's not butter"
time for the D to go to work again.
7 play drive for 76 yards - used up only 3:46 but I'll take it

Nice punt
A 49 yarder - got about 12 of it back on the return though. We could use a 3 and out right now and get their D back on the field.
Good start - pressure leads to incomplete pass. Let's keep that pass rush up!
Another off side penalty against UWA - first down for HU. that is our 7th penalty, but who's counting?
Missed tackle on a run up the middle - gain of 7 yards. First down for HU on next play. They are starting to gash us BUT...we get an interception - NO - the ref says it was trapped - tv replay seems to show he caught it - bad call Mr. Ref.
More missed tackles on a swing pass- HU gets a firs down at our 22. These missed tackles are starting to kill us. Got to tighten up.
UWA injury - time out. Our D can use the rest, I think. We come back from the rest with a nice pass rush - incomplete. Another good pass rush and an incomplete pass. 4th down and they'll try a FG of 36 yds.
dang, it's good. That guy of theirs can kick -that's for sure - he had plenty of room to spare on the kick- plenty.
Time for the O to go to work.

tv time out
this is like the super bowl - a tv timeout seemingly after every change of possession. this game may last awhile. Good thing it's not a school night for me!
Started off the drive with 2 passes and we get a first down. Good start. Ball possession type passes.
Sacked - give that one to the HU secondary - Deion couldn't find a reciever - anywhere.
Roosevelt with a nice run - he is running hard- lots of yards after contact - hope we can see more of that in plays to come.
We are stopped and need to punt. Let's get a good one.
good punt - about 12 yd return.

stats
6 penalties already- we only had 9 for the whole game last week.
HU 213 yds of total offense. We had 176. After the rough start in the first quarter we have played them pretty even - we need to do better than even though. 96 rushing yard in about 1 quarter and a half - we didn't run the ball at all on our first possession and only twice on our 2nd possession. It will be a big boon for us if we can keep cramming it down their throats with the run. Due to the one long drive we had the ball 17 minutes to their 12 - one way to keep their offense from running wild
Here we go - about time to kick off to HU. Special teams needs to get it done right away here to get the half off to a good start.
Good job by special teams - first guy to hit the runner wrapped him up good.

half time
after a tasty ham and turkey 6" sandwich from Subway, I feel better about the first half. Lots of missed tackles - some hurtful penalties and a couple of missed opportunities leave us tied at half time. We showed some promise in grinding out some first downs on an 8 minute plus change drive and if we can keep that going, good things might happen. Better tackling and fewer penalties and we'll be OK.
Band sounded great - a nice sound with 104 members playing. Nice arrangements that Glenn came up with.
3 minutes to go to the start of the 2nd half.
Hang in there Tiger fans. grab a cold beverage of your choice and send some positive thoughts to the team - here we go.

Brandon Tisdale makes interception
Great interception by freshman DB Brandon Tisdale. Stopped a HU drive inside the 10.
Now it's time to start grinding it out again. See if we can run some more clock and keep wearing down their D. We ran 8:28 off the clock on a 17 play drive - we could use more of that right now with the clock running down and us being deep in our own territory. Would hate to have to punt and give them another shot from near mid-field.
Too bad - no first down. Punting from our own end zone. Need a big time kick really bad right now.
Special teams need to step up and make a tackle. Gunner missed a tackle and HU get's the ball on our 38 with 1:23 to go.
Nice tackle on 1st and 10 from our 25 - stopped the runner for no gain.
We broke up a pass on our own 10.
Nice tackle to stop them for no gain
HU looks to be ready to try a 40 yd FG with only 3 seconds left on the clock. Let's get a big play from special teams and block the kick.
great kick. 10-10 at half. we just kissed our sister. Dang.

yet another silly penalty
Why must we do these silly things? Waving a hand in front of an opposing player's face - 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty - we kick off from the 15 and they get great field position at mid-field.
Not smart at all.
Now another penalty - off sides - giving them 2nd and 3 - did we not learn from last week's mistakes?
HU is getting some great blocks from thei wideouts - our DBs are having trouble getting free from them.
Nice interception for UWA

Nice interception for UWA
3 runs
3 runs and we got a first down.
3 more runs and another first down - no big runs - just 6 runs of smash mouth type running.
We had them with 8 in the box and a guy wide open in the flat - he dropped it. Wide open.
Nice run by Deion on 3rd and 5 for a first down.
Great run by UWA for a first down - but a holding penalty - bummer. We are really starting to move the ball on the ground.
Pass to Roosevelt Ross on 2nd and 10 and we get a first down. The good running is really setting up the passes
nice pass on 3rd an 8- a yard short of a first down.
tough one yard run by Roosevelt for the a first down -he really stuck his nose in it that time.
great throw and catch by Mike Townsend for a TD - about 25 yards.
What a great drive - ate up some clock - kept our D off the field - wore their D down some - some real smash mouth football and some nice spread type passing - great mixture there.
Hope we can keep the running going - I like that A LOT!!!

good stop by defense
HU drove the ball a good ways down the field - to our 17 but the D stiffened. Still missing some tackles out there - 2 penalties on HU helped a lot. Our ball first and 10 on our 17.
time for the O to make something good happen. We had some good running in the last drive and it would be good to see that continue. Need to give the defense a bit of a rest - they've been out on the field for a while in that first quarter.

pass rush
We started getting some pass rush on this defensive series. Need to keep that up - HU is getting recievers wide open when the QB has all day to throw.
end of 1st quarter
seems like we may be a slow starting team - started out slow last week too. Can't wait too long or this HU bunch will put some points on the board in a hurry - they are getting guys wide open and we are missing some tackles.

great run
Roosevelt Ross just had a great run - broke some tackles - first sign of a running game. Follows with a nice hard run for 5 yards. Another good run - by Baylor. Starting to find some holes to run now -
drive dies - 38 yd FG is good - Tigers are on the board.
We finally showed some life on offense that drive. Must have made some adjustments since we started finding holes for our runners. Hope we can keep the running going - it'll make the passing that much easier.
Need a good defensive series now.

tigers' 3rd possession
finally got a first down - 2 passes and one run. Maybe the start of something. Terry Levy couldn't hold onto a long pass - almost a great completion down to their 20.
end of the possession - one first down and a near miss on a long pass. Better but we need to get a drive going.
end of the possession - one first down and a near miss on a long pass. Better but we need to get a drive going.
good defensive stand
Stopped them that time - only one first down. Some enthusiasm now - maybe the O can get something going.
time out on field
After 2 offensive series, UWA has nothing to show - no first downs, 2 penalties and no stops on defense. Not a great start to the game. The guys have to hang in there til things get to going our way.
2nd series on O
Great coverage by HU on the kick off. Bad field position for UWA to start the drive. Illegal substitution penalty - another mistake. Yikes.
3 and out again - 2 runs for 3 yards and one pass.
Nice punt = forced a fair catch.
3 and out again - 2 runs for 3 yards and one pass.
Nice punt = forced a fair catch.
bad defensive series
Nice pass by HU - no pass rush - all day to throw on first down. Need to get some pressure on the QB for sure.
Off sides by UWA - another mitake/penalty.
TD for HU - reciever wide open up the middle - no pressure on QB.
This series scares me a little. Too easy for HU. Got to tighten up the D.

special teams
UWA gave up a punt return - special teams didn't do it that time. Nice punt but a missed tackle and some bad angles let us down.
here we go
less than 15' til kick-off. and the Scarlet Band from Tiger Land is on he field forming a large
U-W-A. I found out they are 104 strong this year - should provide a lot more volume this year.
The Tigers are just off the corner of the end zone waiting to come through the tunnel and onto the field.
A moment of silence now for two recently deceased members of the UWA family - former president Don Hines and Head of Groundskeeping, Walter Boyd. I never knew Dr. Hines, but Walter was as good a guy as you could want. He really helped me and the cross country program. He never said no and always did all he could to help us out. He will really be missed by not only the cross country team but the athletic department in general. I am sure he has a good seat for tonight's game.
The band is playing and both teams are coming onto the field now. It won't be long....
Something new - the teams walk en masse onto the field to shake hands as a show of sportmanship. Nice to see that. Why can't DI teams do the same thing - Oklahoma State's coach was worried a brawl would break out if the shook hands with UGA before the game - sad commentary on collegiate sports right there. Evidently there is a bit more character in the DII game.
Officials are getting ready to walk the co-captains onto the field for the toin coss.
Tigers win the toss and elect to receive. Here we go!!!
30' to kick off
Harding is leaving the field going back to the dressing area in Pruitt Hall. The Tigers are still warming-up. The crowd is growing and you can feel the excitement building. Sitting here wondering if our guys will be able to keep their excitement under control and avoid some of those 9 penalties we had in the first game. In a game with a better opponent - like tonight - those penalties might be drive killers. Concentration has to be better tonight.
The Tigers just left the field to go to their dressing room in Homer Field House. Won't be long now.
The little tent through which the Tigers will come onto the field is ready now, awaiting their arrival.
the band is seated in the lower right hand section of the home side of the field and they are taking up 5 or 6 whole rows - Glenn Smith does a heck of a job recruiting to get that many kids. Good work Glenn.
The field is empty now - won't be long before toe meets leather - actually it's more like leather meets leather - no barefoot kickers on either squad this year.
Dee Outlaw is announcing opening lineups now - how many years has he done that? He has seen a lot of great games and some exceptional players during his stay at Livingston U/UWA.
The flags are lying pretty limp right now - wind shouldn't be a factor, at least early in the game.

PS If you are in the neighborhood, stop off and catch some of the game. It's a beautiful night at Tiger Stadium. Could be a great night if things go well.

55' til kick-off
Hardings hogs are on the field now going through their stretches as the kickers continue to warm-up and work on their techniques. We've had a good # of 40 yd FG go through the uprights - some that would have been good from 45 yds or more. Stil waiting on the bulk of the Tigers to come out and start their warm-ups. The Tigers jerseys are a bright red - nice contrast with the Bison's black pants, white jerseys with black letters and black trim and black helmets. White pants for the Tigers with red helmets and white numbers. The field looks in good shape - I definitely like the larger TIGER letters in the end zone - started with that last year and continued over to this season - looks good. Beautiful night out - slight breeze which should make it comfortable for those sitting outside this nicely air conditioned press box.
More of the UWA players coming out onto the field for warm-ups now and some waiting in the tent in the corner of the home end zone.
the band is marching along the fence outside the stadium, getting ready to come into the stands. I don't have any numbers, but the band looks to have more musicians than last year. I'll see if I can get some #'s .
Rest of the Tigers are coming onto the field now and massing in the end zone. The intensity of the warm-ups seems to be picking up now. Reminds me of my first ever GSC home game back in '83 when I was at UWG. I travelled to the Livingston University game and stoon on the visitor's sideline and was impressed at how large and how into the game the crowd was.
Looks like we have some large linemen - larger than last year. I know the O line was a point of emphasis during recruting and during camp. The D-2 blog seemed to think that HU's defense is better than the one that gave up almost 600 yard in offense to us last year - we'll see. I definitely think our offense will be better - great skill position guys and a QB with more experience in the system this year. If the OL holds up, we should be able to score points this year.
45' to go. Back at ya in a few minutes.

mmm,mmm,good
Just finished a moderately sized serving of banana pudding from Andys Home Plate - right off the interstate - and it was good. Very different from the BP that we ate from Chimneyville at the Bellhaven game - but still very good. Andy's is kind of new so make a stop there on the way to the interstate or after getting off and give it a try. Rumor is they will soon have homemade potato chips. Yumm.
70' til kickoff. The rest of the players should be out on the field for warm-ups fairly soon. I'll be back -

5:40 PM
Great seat for this game - looking right down the 50 yard line - looking right at the tv tower across the field - it's covered by a nice white tent courtesy of the cross country team. I'll write about them later- they open tomorrow at Southern Miss.
Some wide outs are on the field doing some pass catching drills as well as the FG kickers trying out their range finders - our guys have hit some from 40 yards out and are moving back a bit from that to try some longer ones.
A few fans have already driften into Tiger Stadium - just heard the banana pudding has arrived in the press box so I'll get back to you in a few spoonfuls - oops I mean a few minutes.

Pre - game jitters
Here is it - an hour and 45 minutes before kick-off. My first blog - ever - so I'm a little nervous right now - but some good fried chicken from the CAF and a couple of chocolate chip cookies should take care of that.
I'm excited about tonight's game - we showed flashes of potential last week against Bellhaven but there were a lot of mistakes that need to be eliminated. Hopefully, this week's practice took care of that.
We really were strong offensively against Harding last year - almost 600 yards of total offense but 6 turnovers and 9 penalties really put our defense in a tough spot throughout the game. If we can tighten up our ball security tonight, our chances will go up dramatically.
Deion looked pretty sharp for the first game out - he found his recievers and they showed good hands most of the night - very few dropped passes. Not as much running against Bellhaven as we might need against conference opponents. We'll see if we can do some pounding when it counts tonight.
I'll be back in a while. Let us know what you think about the blog - anything you might want mentioned that isn't.
